02/07/2013 – The women's basketball team was defeated by Cornerstone by the count of 60-44 in WHAC action from the Mol Arena in Grand Rapids. The victory improved the Golden Eagles record to 17-10 on the season and to 11-8 in league play, while the Saints fell to 8-11 in the WHAC and to 12-13 overall. Aquinas currently finds themselves tied with UM Dearborn for seventh place in the WHAC standings.
The Saints, who were looking to avenge a six point loss to the Golden Eagles in January, had their sites set on extending their winning streak to four games. Unfortunately on this night the Golden Eagles had other plans. The two teams were matched in a tightly contested first half that saw Cornerstone build a four point (21-17) advantage.
The second half began with a 17-5 run by the Golden Eagles to lengthen their lead to 18 points with less than twelve minutes to play. Aquinas would trim the lead to a dozen at the 2:37 mark, but could not get any closer. Cornerstone would hold onto the 60-44 victory and remain in fifth place in the WHAC.
The Saints were led by Chelsea Matley who scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Robyn Veltkamp paced the Golden Eagles with 24 points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Saints will host #10 Davenport (24-2, 17-2) at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
