Turnovers/Shooting Dooms Saints

02/07/2013 – The men's basketball team was defeated by the Golden Eagles in WHAC action at the Mol Arena on the campus of Cornerstone University. The Golden Eagles improved to 17-10 on the season and to 11-8 in league play, while the Saints fell to 9-10 in the WHAC and to 11-16 overall. Currently the Saints are in eighth place in the WHAC standings with three games left in the regular season.

The Saints defeated Cornerstone back on January 2nd by the count of 81-69 at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. Aquinas was looking for the season sweep, but turnovers (20) and 30% shooting proved to much to overcome as the Golden Eagles won "ugly" 51-44.

Cornerstone, who led the contest from wire to wire, matched Aquinas' 30% shooting from the field, but was awarded 14 more free attempts (22-8) than the Saints. The Golden Eagles led 26-17 at the half and extended the advantage to as many as 15 in the second half. A three by Brett Pfahler as time expired brought the Saints to within seven, but too little too late as the Golden Eagles would win 51-44 and remained tied for fifth place in the WHAC standings.

The Saints were led by Pfahler's 14 points, while Austin Semple scored nine points and grabbed 12 rebounds. The Golden Eagles were paced by Derek Kingshott's 12 points and seven rebounds.

Aquinas will return to action on Saturday as they host #10 Davenport (22-5, 15-4 WHAC) at 3 p.m.
