02/10/2013 – The men's basketball team was defeated by the Panthers in WHAC action at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. Davenport improved to 23-5 on the season and to 16-4 in league play, while the Saints fell to 9-11 in the WHAC and to 11-17 overall. Currently the Saints are in eighth place in the WHAC standings with two games left in the regular season.
The Saints, who had defeated Davenport earlier in the year, were looking to complete the season sweep on their home court. The two teams traded baskets earlier with neither team staking claim to an early advantage. The score was tied at 13 when a fatal ten minute stretch buried the Saints. Davenport went on a 26-2 flurry to build a 39-15 lead with three minutes to play in the half. The two teams exited the court with Davenport holding a 40-21 halftime lead.
The second half saw more of the same as the lead would swell to as many as 31 at one point. Coach Hammer's bench received the majority of the minutes during the second half and got to experience some "big game" minutes. The Panthers would triumph 72-46 and keep their WHAC title hopes in line.
The Saints were led by Joe Ferrici, Bryan Mitzner and Nick Gregory. The trio accounted for eight points a piece in extended minutes of work.
Aquinas will travel to Lawrence Tech (3-25, 2-18 WHAC) on Wednesday to battle the Blue Devils.
