02/17/2013 – The men's basketball team was defeated by Madonna at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center on Senior Day 76-67. The victory improved the Crusaders record to 22-8 overall and to 17-5 in league play, while the Saints fell to 10-12 in the WHAC and to 12-18 on the season. Madonna finished the regular season in second place in the WHAC standings, while the Saints will enter the WHAC Tournament as the eighth seed. The duo of Zach Eddy and Kenny Gordon were honored at the half for their service to the men's basketball program over the years.
The Saints entered the final home contest of the season looking for a win to gain some momentum heading into the upcoming postseason tournament. Madonna, on the other hand, was riding a five game winning streak and appeared to be playing their best ball of the season.
The Crusaders jumped all over the Saints early as they methodically built an 18 point lead during the first half. On the strength of 64% shooting and 18-9 rebound advantage Madonna took a 44-27 lead into the halftime locker room.
The advantage would swell to as many as 24 during the second half before a late rally by the Saints brought the score to within nine when the final buzzer sounded.
Zach Eddy concluded his last home at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center with 20 points, while Austin Semple, Brett Pfahler and Connor McCane all chipped in with eleven points a piece.
The Saints will open the WHAC Tournament on Thursday as they travel to Davenport (25-5) to battle the Panthers at 7:30 p.m.
