04/07/2013 – The women's softball team opened up the home portion of their schedule with a pair of victories over Concordia. The Saints improved to 14-11 on the season and to 2-2 in the WHAC, while the Cardinals fell to 12-9-1 overall and to 0-4 in league play.
The Saints offense gave Rebecca Shineldecker (3-7) plenty of support in game one as they accounted for 10 runs on 13 hits. The power surge was ignited by Jenn Woolard in the second inning. A two-run shot off Corrina Rotondo gave the Saints the early advantage. The fireworks continue to spark in the fourth as Courtney Bishop drove in a run with a double and Irma Cruz singled to score two more. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of lead off hitter Lindsey Stewart. Stewart's homer to center capped the inning an extended the Saints lead to 6-0. Shineldecker would do the rest as she went six strong as she allowed two runs on three hits while striking out eight. The Saints added runs in the fifth and sixth with Stewart once again playing hero driving in a pair. The Saints closed out the Cardinals 10-2 in six innings.
The pitchers played center stage for both teams in game two. Carlie Giarmo (7-3) had a very solid outing allowing one run on three hits. Giarmo's counterpart, Kortney Loar, was equally as impressive as she allowed two runs and scattered nine hits. The Saints offense struck first with a lone run in the first inning. A single off the bat of Sadie Stowell allowed Lindsey Stewart to cross home. The Cardinals tied the score with a home run in the fifth by Ashley Chang. The score would remain tied until the bottom half of the seventh when Stowell's walk-off single secured the 2-1 victory and the sweep of Concordia.
The Saints will return to the field on Sunday with a home doubleheader versus Siena Heights at 1 p.m.
