04/07/2013 – The men's and women's track & field teams traveled to East Lansing to compete in the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State.
Under less than ideal conditions both squads competed at a high level and performed well against quality fields in all events. The meet was highlighted by the school record toss in the hammer throw by Emily Smith. Smith's toss of 172-3.25 bettered her previous record set last week by eight and a half feet. Emily is now ranked seventh nationally in the hammer and fourth in her specialty event, the discus. Smith has automatically qualified for the outdoor championships in both the hammer and the discus and is provisional qualified in the shot put. Emily placed in the top six in all three events at Michigan State.
In the women's pole vault, Marika Rietsema in now ranked third all-time at Aquinas College as she soared over the bar at 10-2.75.
Overall the Saints recorded 20 personal bests and eight "top ten" individual finishes in addition to Smith's three. Including: Ryan Helminiak (5th - High Jump, 6-5), Britta Patterson (6th - 5000 Meter, 18:21.63), Jeff Cherry (7th - 5000 Meter, 15:08.69), Alicia Dorko (7th - Pole Vault, 11-8.5), Michale Shearon (8th - High Jump, 6-3.25), Jason Parnell (8th - 200 Meters, 22.24), Caleb Teachout (10th - 800 Meter, 1:57.22) and Chris Eggenberger (10th - 100 Meter, 11.19)
