04/14/2013 – The women's lacrosse team was defeated by host Indiana Tech 14-13 in the first ever championship game of the WHAC Tournament. The Warriors improved to 12-2 on the season, while the Saints fell to 12-5 overall. Both teams will now move on and advance to the NWLL Championships this week in St. Louis, Missouri.
The Saints, with the tourney championship on the line, were looking for their first victory of the year over the Warriors (lost previous two meetings by matching 13-11 scores). Both squads new a close, tightly contested game would be on tap; especially with the team title on the line.
Aquinas started quickly scoring three of the first four goals of the game. A Haley Jacob goal combined with a pair of goals by Lauren McCarty gave the Saints the early 3-1 advantage. The game remained close until a four goal surge midway through the first half gave the Warriors some breathing room at 7-4. The two teams traded late goals forcing the Saints to regroup at the half and look to overcome the three goal deficit.
The Saints methodically worked themselves back into the contest over the first twenty minutes of the second half. The senior trio of McCarty, Kati Rogers and Liza Flewelling accounted for five goals bringing the Saints within one (11-10) with a little over ten minutes to play. A quick two goal spurt lifted the Warriors back to a three goal lead. The Saints mounted one last rally scoring three goals over a three minute stretch to close the gap to one with :45 to play. After winning the faceoff, the Saints could not complete the comeback falling 14-13 in Fort Wayne.
The Saints offense was led by Lauren McCarty's seven goals. Liza Flewelling chipped in with two goals and five assists to help the cause. The WHAC Defensive Player of the Year, Breanne Stockall, was credited with the loss as she stopped 11 of 25 shots.
The Saints will now travel to St. Louis to take part in the NWLL Championship. Aquinas enters the tournament as the #4 seed and are matched with Midland in the first round. The Saints and Warriors (8-5) will play at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams met up in Adrian less than a month ago with the Saints winning 13-6.
