08/28/2013 – The men's soccer team opened the 2013 season with a convincing 2-0 victory over the Cougars from Spring Arbor. The Saints improved to 1-0 on the year, while their opponents from the Crossroads Conference fell to 1-2 on the season.
The Saints, whose roster features 17 new players, were looking to establish a new identity during the first of many early season tests. The reigning WHAC Tournament Champions struck first as newcomer, Aldony Mendez scored his first goal as a Saint in the waning moments of half number one. Senior captain, Michael Gagnon was credited with the assist on Mendez's goal.
The veteran duo of Jonathan Spencer and Peter Brandenburg combined forces to add an insurance goal during the 59th minute of play. Spencer's fourth career goal concluded the scoring for both squads.
Craig Demshuck was credited with the victory in net as he shutout the Cougars on all four shots on goal. Overall the Saints out shot Spring Arbor 10-6 and will now switch their attention to the Pilots of Bethel (1-2).
The Saints will host the Pilots on Saturday starting at 3:30 p.m. at the Aquinas Athletic Field.
