09/05/2013 – The men's soccer team used a four goal attack to defeat St. Xavier 4-0. The win also snapped a three match losing skid to the Cougars. The victory improved the Saints record to 3-0, while St. Xavier remained winless at 0-4.
The Saints, who have now outscored the opposition 8-1 during their early season home stand, lit the scoreboard early in this contest. Jonathan Spencer netted his second goal of the season during the 10th minute of play to give the Saints an early advantage. The duo of Aldony Mendez and Mitch Torres were credited with assists on the eventual game winning goal. A little over ten minutes had past when Mendez scored for the third consecutive match. Torres collected his second assist of the match on the goal by Mendez. The 25th minute of play brought another Aquinas goal as Spencer collected his second of the day and third of the season. The Saints headed to the locker room with a 3-0 cushion.
Aquinas maintained a three goal advantage up until the 89th minute when Torres added an insurance score to go along with his two assists. Cam Vela was awarded his first career point as a Saint as he assisted on the Torres goal.
Craig Demshuk, the reigning WHAC Defensive Player of the Week, notched the victory in net as he recorded five saves. The Cougars keeper, AJ Pfatschbacher, stopped four shots in defeat.
The Saints will look for more home cooking on Friday afternoon as they play host to Cleary College (0-3). The two squads will square off at the AQ Athletic Field at 4 p.m.
