Mendez Nets Hat-Trick in Saints Victory

09/06/2013 – The men's soccer team ran their unbeaten streak to four matches as the Saints defeated Cleary College by the count of 7-0. Aquinas improved to 4-0 on the season, while the Cougars fell to 1-4 overall.

The Saints, who have now outscored the opposition 15-1, continue to show all the attributes of a championship caliber squad. Aquinas, who put touchdown and an extra point on Cleary College, scored early and often in this contest.

Aldony Mendez kick started the Saints offense with a goal during the 14th minute of play. Mitch Torres and Craig Demshuk were credited with the assists on the eventual game winner by Mendez. The Saints second goal arrived two minutes later as the Torres to Torres connection became a reality. Mitch scored his second goal of the season on an assist by Juan Torres. Mendez completed his hat-trick within the confines of the first half as he scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season during the 34th and 40th minute of play. Michael Gagnon and Jon Malecke collected assists on Mendez's second goal of the game. Brandon Montgomery, a freshman from Traverse City, concluded the scoring in the first half with a goal with 1:46 to play in the half. The Saints entered "The Moose" holding a five goal advantage over the Cougars.

Insurance goals were added by Matt Jackson and Melecio Terrones during the games second half to see the Saints prevail for the shutout victory. The combination of Demshuk and Trevor Kay combined to keep Cleary off the scoreboard. Kay collected four saves in his first appearance of the season. Aquinas outshot the Cougars 30-6 and held a distinct 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Saints have no time to rest as they return to their home field to tangle with the Maple Leafs of Goshen College (0-4). The ball is set to drop at 4 p.m. at the AQ Athletic Field on Saturday.
