09/15/2013 – The women's volleyball team opened the conference portion of their schedule by splitting a pair of contests over the weekend. On Saturday the Saints were defeated by Northwestern Ohio by the count of 3-1 in Lima, Ohio. The victory improved the Racers mark to 9-1 on the season and to 2-0 in league play. On Sunday the Saints traveled to South Bend, Indiana to defeat Indiana Tech in straight sets. Aquinas improved to 2-3 overall and to 1-1 in the WHAC, while the Warriors fell to 2-11 on the season and to 1-1 within the conference.
The Saints used a third set rally versus the Racers to extend the first match of the weekend. A competitively played fourth set went to Northwestern Ohio and completed the four set win for the Racers (25-18, 25-17, 25-27, 25-22). The Saints offensive attack was keyed by Elle Sturgell's ten kills. Nicci Thomas chalked up 28 assists, while Anna Fencil anchored the defense with twelve digs. Meghan Veldheer was credited with four block assists during the match.
Aquinas evened their league mark on Sunday with a three set sweep of the Warriors of Indiana Tech (25-22, 25-19, 26-24). The duo of Molly Maynard (eleven kills) and Sierra VanTil (ten kills) provided the offensive spark that carried the Saints to their first victory within the WHAC in 2013. Nicci Thomas tallied 20 assists, while Fencil and Rachel Sprenger both collected 16 digs. Molly Maynard added four solo blocks, while Elle Sturgell contributed three.
The Saints will return to the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center for a date with Grace Bible (0-6) on Tuesday. First serve will take place at 7 p.m.
