09/18/2013 – The men's soccer team extended their season opening win streak to seven matches as they defeated the Fighting Saints of St. Francis 3-0. The road win improved the Saints record to 7-0, while St. Francis fell to 1-3 on the season.
Aquinas, who was looking to complete the sweep of the two St. Francis institutions, struck early as Aldony Mendez scored his eighth goal of the year on a breakaway. Mendez received assistance from seniors Jonathan Spencer and Michael Gagnon on the eventual game winner scored in the 18th minute of play. Spencer notched his second assist of the game during the 32nd minute as Peter Brandenburg notched his first career goal on shot from 15 yards out.
Aquinas headed into the half with a two goal lead and looking for more. The more came in the form of an insurance goal scored by Michael Weber at the 65:17 of half number two. Weber's goal also marked the first of his career as Tucker Hogarth tallied the assist on Weber's inaugural goal.
Craig Demshuk was awarded the victory as he earned the shutout by stopping all five shots on goal. The Saints outshot St. Francis to the tune of 15-9.
Aquinas will now travel to Lima, Ohio on Saturday to open conference play. The Saints will battle the Racers of Northwestern Ohio (4-0-2) at 3 p.m.
