09/23/2013 – The men’s hockey team began the 2013–14 season on a winning note in a thrilling, come-from-behind, overtime victory over Notre Dame University on Sunday afternoon at the Compten Family Arena in South Bend, Indiana. Playing shorthanded due to a minor penalty and trailing 3–2 with less than two minutes to go in regulation, Carson Miller split the Irish defense on a pass from Corey Giffel and tallied the game tying goal – his second of the game - with 1:37 left to play.
The Saints went into overtime with momentum in hand. They didn’t have to wait very long as Notre Dame was penalized for intentionally dislodging the net while attempting to delay the Aquinas offensive onslaught resulting in a rare overtime penalty shot. Sophomore forward Sam Matthews was awarded the opportunity and made it ‘no doubt’ as he rifled home a blistering shot to secure the overtime victory and a happy bus ride home.
Senior Hugh Ingalls also added a goal earlier in the contest and the freshman goaltending tandem of Sean Schmeiser and Matt Glowacki combined to stop 28 shots.
The game was a ‘homecoming’ of sorts for three Aquinas freshmen. Graham Gates (Marian), Charlie Crowley (Valparaiso), and Matt Glowacki (LSJ) all hail from the South Bend area.
