Service-Learning Programs: Acadia National Park

Description of Program:
Each year, Acadia National Park welcomes volunteers who contribute more than 25,000 hours, by caring the trails, carriage roads, campgrounds, museums, libraries, offices, summits, and shores of Acadia.  Almost 2,000 people annually make the time to give something back to the only national park in Maine.
 
Description of Services:
During fall break week, October 16-24, 2009, a group of Aquinas students and their advisor travel to Acadia National Park, located on the East Coast of Maine. The service work may include a variety of outdoor projects to beautify Acadia National Park. Work may be strenuous and involve digging and/or lifting supplies. The group will drive to and from Acadia National Park (20 hours each way) by van. Travel through Canada is planned, and due to new regulations participants will need valid passports.
 
Living Arrangements:
The group will be stay in simple cabins while in the Park. Average temperature at that time will be in the 30's at night. The group will be responsible for setting up and maintaining camp as well as for preparing meals.
 
Financial Arrangements:
The cost for this trip is $200, which goes toward the cost of lodging, transportation, and food on-site. Participants should bring spending money for meals and snacks on the way to and from Acadia National Park. Your Aquinas student account must be in good standing to participate on this Service-Learning trip.
 
Payment Process:
A NON-REFUNDABLE program fee of $200 will be charged to your student account. If you are not accepted, the charge will be cancelled. If you are accepted, you will be responsible to pay your program fee through your student account. Note: Even if you withdraw from the program, after being accepted, you are still responsible for the payment. Student Account policies apply to any unpaid balances.
 
Requirements:
  • Space is limited, and priority will be given to current full-time, traditional age Aquinas students, though graduate students and guests are welcome to apply. (Prices may differ for guests.)

  • A personal interview.
  • A valid passport.
  • Attend an orientation meeting.
