Service-Learning Programs: Christian Appalachian Project (CAP)

Applications available Sept. 2008

"A community is only a community when the majority of its members are making the transition from 'the community for myself' to 'myself for the community', when each person's heart is opening to all the others without any exception." - CAP

Description of Program:
The Christian Appalachian Project is a community founded to assist the people of Eastern Kentucky with self-help programs. The Christian Appalachian Project is an interdenominational, non-profit Christian organization committed to serving people in need in Appalachia by providing physical, spiritual and emotional support through a wide variety of programs and services. The program strives to promote humanity and spirituality by focusing on daily prayer, community building, and the various CAP programs.

Description of Services:
Aquinas students spend one week in Eastern Kentucky working with students from thirteen other colleges or universities. The type of work involved in Workfest is typically home repairs and building. The people of the community also join in to help build their own homes. The dates for this trip are March 9-13, 2009.

Living Arrangements:
The group of students will stay in volunteer houses with the permanent volunteers. All meals will be provided by the CAP volunteer house and prepared by the entire group. The group participates with other volunteers in evening community building and reflection sessions.

Financial Arrangements:
Due to funding from the Senate, the cost to each student is only $125, which is applied to the cost of room and board for the week. Participants are asked to bring snacks and spending money for food stops on the way to and from Kentucky.

Payment Process:
A NON-REFUNDABLE program fee of $125 will be charged to your student account. If you are not accepted, the charge will be cancelled. If you are accepted, you will be responsible to pay your program fee through your student account. Note: Even if you withdraw from the program, after being accepted, you are still responsible for the payment. Student Account policies apply to any unpaid balances.

Requirements:
  • Space is limited, and priority will be given to current full-time, traditional age Aquinas students, though graduate students and guests are welcome to apply. (Prices may differ for guests.)
  • Applications available Sept. 2008.
  • A personal interview.
  • A completed health/emergency contact form.
  • A submitted/signed payment contract. (See payment process above.)
