Online application available via CourseConnect* >>Apply Now

Description of Program:
A counter-cultural experience of living, learning and working with members of Jonah House, a community devoted to non-violence, the environment, peaceful resistance community living.  Jonah House is a spiritually based community. Although it is predominately of the Catholic tradition, members of many faith traditions have participated in the community over the years. The community gathers each weekday morning to start the day in prayer; it is joined by a larger circle to celebrate an ecumenical liturgy each Sunday.  The Jonah House Community has welcomed hundreds of college students over the years for Service Learning experiences.

Description of Services:
During fall break week, October 16-24, 2009, students will join Jonah House community members to engage in food redistribution projects; tend the garden and  orchard; care for the animals (llamas, goats, donkey, chickens); attend prayer vigils in Washington DC; and participate in daily sessions to learn more about: community living, non-violence as a way of life, and non-violent resistance. Students will have several hours of free time in Washington DC before and after prayer vigils. An alternative tour of Baltimore is possible.

Living Arrangements:
The students will live in the community house which was built in 1995 with mostly recycled materials.  Bring sleeping bag, pillow, towel and washcloth.  Beds and air mattresses are provided.  Students will help out with meal preparation and household chores. Jonah House is located on the perimeter of St. Peter’s Cemetery which the community members maintain in exchange for housing.  See photos taken by Sr. Kathi during her spring 2007 visit.

Financial Arrangements:
The cost of the trip is $220.  This covers room and board while in Baltimore as well as van rental and gas. Students are asked to bring spending money and money for meal stops to and from Baltimore.

Payment Process:
A NON-REFUNDABLE program fee of $220 will be charged to your student account. If you are not accepted, the charge will be cancelled. If you are accepted, you will be responsible to pay your program fee through your student account. Note: Even if you withdraw from the program, after being accepted, you are still responsible for the payment. Student Account policies apply to any unpaid balances.
