Carry Your Current Energy Into Future Teaching

The passion you feel now as a new teacher is possible to last an entire career--reaching every student as long as you believe that "Every Student Succeeds." What are you most excited about? What scares you the most? How can we take those feelings/that energy and have it create the best teacher possible? What are your core values?

Available Breakout Sessions (breakout sessions will be chosen upon arrival to the conference on a first come, first serve basis):

Option 1:  Love & Logic in the Classroom
Greg Eding, Assistant Principal at Creekside Middle School at Zeeland Public Schools

Do you ever feel like a student makes a bad decision, only to then use their amazing arguing skills to make this your problem? Find out how to neutralize arguing and help kids learn to work through their
own consequences.

Option 2: Teaching Science from a Historical Perspective
Kirt Van Overen, Aquinas College

Can you prove that we do not live in a geocentric solar system?
How do we know that the Earth is round?
Why were certain people of history likely to become great thinkers?
HOW do we know WHAT we know?

Option 3: How To Turn Students On To Social Studies
Keith Hesche, Ionia Public/Jefferson Elementary 4th Grade Teacher

What are some ways to motivate and encourage students to learn social studies? What are some of the best practices being used in 2005? How can we
help students make connections to their lives and the world around them?

Option 4: Effective Mathematics Learning Through Differentiation

Mary DeYoung, Hope College

Division with remainders…what's a remainder? What can we learn from the remainder? How do we structure classroom activities in order to help students understand the process of division?

Option 5: Action Research

Laurie Schmidt, OAISD: Action Research

How can action research help my students learn?  How do my students learn best?  Is this strategy making a difference in student learning?  How can I ensure my own continued professional growth?
