What is ArtPrize?

"ArtPrize is a radically open competition. Open to any artist in the world who can find space. Open to anybody in Grand Rapids, Michigan who wants to create a venue. Open to a vote from anyone who attends." >Visit ArtPrize.org

This year 1,537 artists are displaying their works in 174 downtown Grand Rapids locations (within a 3-square-mile radius). The competition runs from September 24 through October 12, 2014. Artists will be competing for $560,000 in prizes - Two grand prizes worth $200,000 each, and eight category awards worth $20,000 each. Half of the awards will be decided by public vote, and the other half by a jury of art experts.

AQ Alumni Help Support Cathedral Square ArtPrize Venue

Aquinas College continues its support of ArtPrize as a sponsor of the Cathedral Square showcase venue during the 2014 competition. In addition, AQ is well represented in the staff organizing the Cathedral Square show. This year’s event marks the fifth competition that AQ alumna Liz Hertl '10, a fine arts major, will work with the Diocese of Grand Rapids and their showcase venue. Recent graduate Michelle Plumstead ‘14, an English and art dual major, joins Liz this year as Assistant Curator. Alumnus Dustin Coon ‘12 is serving as Communications Coordinator at Cathedral Square, and former curator and AQ professor emeritus Ron Pederson has continued his involvement with the show. Through their work, Liz, Michelle, Dustin and Ron continue to foster an ongoing relationship between Aquinas College and the Diocese of Grand Rapids.
