C. Edward Balog, Ph.D., President
 
C. Edward Balog, Ph.D. C. Edward Balog, Ph.D., was unanimously selected by the Board of Trustees on May 22, 2007 as the sixth Aquinas College president. He begins his official duties on July 1.

Dr. Balog served as interim president since July 2006. In addition to his presidential responsibilities, Dr. Balog continues to serve as provost, dean of the faculty and professor of history. He has also taught in the Aquinas Emeritus College.

Before coming to Aquinas in 2000, Dr. Balog served as vice president for
academic affairs, dean of the faculty and professor of history at Marian College in Indianapolis. He received his bachelor and master degrees in history from West Virginia University and earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of Illinois.
 
In his role as provost and dean of faculty, Dr. Balog serves as the chief academic officer for the College and oversees the management of all academic and student development enterprises. He is responsible for the recruitment, hiring and evaluation of the faculty and leads the evaluation of all academic programs.  He has made curriculum development and strategic planning the focus of his work at Aquinas and has played a key role in the re-accreditation process.
 
Working closely with the Admissions staff, Dr. Balog continues to oversee an aggressive and highly successful enrollment plan which he implemented in 2004. He also was instrumental in structuring an agreement with the Grand Rapids Dominicans to convert Aquinata Hall on the campus of Marywood - the Dominicans’ home - into student housing for fifty Aquinas women, beginning in fall of 2007.
 
Dr. Balog presided over the opening of the Grace Hauenstein Library in fall 2006 and has been working closely with architects to develop plans for the renovation of the second floor of the Academic Building into classrooms, faculty offices, and student lounge areas.  He also has been working with architects and engineers to develop a three-phase addition and renovation of the existing Field House.
 
In addition to his College responsibilities, Dr. Balog has served in a variety of community leadership positions at various levels, including the library board, police and fire personnel board, the planning commission, city council and theatre board.  He is a member of Phi Alpha Theta, the Organization of American Historians and the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) Chief Academic Officers.
 
Dr. Balog and his wife, Catherine Logsdon, have four children: Melanie, C. Edward Jr., Andrew and Madeline.
