Glenn Barkan, Ph.D., has been a Professor of Political Science since 1973, and Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences since spring, 2004. As Dean, he oversees eighteen academic departments and more than seventy full-time faculty. The Aquinas International Programs and the General Education program also report to his office.

Dean Barkan has played an active role in politics, the Grand Rapids community, and the discipline of political science. He is a former member of the Boards of the World Affairs Council, the Office of the Public Defender, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Grand Rapids Planning Commission. Barkan was a Court Appointed Special Advocate and a consultant to the creation of the Grand Valley Metro Council, and the Aquinas-Eastown project. Within the Department of Political Science, Barkan teaches courses in American government and politics and urban affairs. His research and writing have covered a variety of topics, and he is currently working in the area of health care policy.
