Joseph Baker Award / Sr. Helen Louise Brogger Award

The Joseph Baker Award and the Sr. Helen Louise Brogger Award are given annually to the most outstanding male and female student-athletes.  Candidates are nominated by the College coaching staff and selected by the Aquinas Alumni Board. The Baker Award was initiated in 1958 to honor the top senior male athlete. In 1978 the Board voted to expand the honor to include female student-athletes, as the College’s sports program had grown from seven sports to 15.

In the fall of 1988 the College’s athletic staff and faculty athletic committee approved the adoption of the Sr. Helen Louise Brogger Award to honor an outstanding woman who passed away in the spring of 1988. This award would mirror the Baker award, would be its equal and was to be given to the senior woman student-athlete who best fits the criteria.

Joseph Baker was active in all sports while attending St. Joseph High School in Muskegon, Michigan. After he graduated, he took a position at Shaw-Walker Company with his brother, Henry. Joseph offered his services as a coach at St. Joseph. After serving in the Army in World War II, he came to Aquinas College and graduated in 1950. Baker and his wife, Carolyn, had three children: Thomas, Joseph and Therese. Joseph was head coach at Aquinas College in basketball, baseball and also served as Athletic Director. Baker died in June, 1957.

The Brogger Memorial Award is named in memory of Sr. Helen Louise Brogger. Sr. Helen served the College from 1960-1981 as business manager during a period of rapid change and growth at the institution. Prior to 1960 she served as an instructor in the math program for five years. Brogger earned a B.A. degree at St. Joseph’s College and did graduate work at both Notre Dame and the University of Michigan. Sr. Helen earned her Master of Arts degree from the later. Brogger was entirely devoted to the College. Aquinas always came first with her, as the welfare of the College was at the center of her work. Sister Helen Louise was also an avid fan of the athletic teams and attended as many events as possible. In 1980 the Athletic Department honored her by awarding her a senior varsity blanket for all her years of support and service.
