AQUINAS SAINTS WIN WHAC ALL-SPORTS TROPHY
WHAC Logo

May 11 -- For the second consecutive year, Aquinas College placed first in the race for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) All-Sports Trophy. The Saints have captured the WHAC All-Sports Trophy in ten of the last twelve years. The WHAC All-Sports Trophy is computed using the highest finish in eight conference sports (four women and four men) for each school.

Each sport champion is awarded points based on the number of schools participating in each sport. For a sport with all eight schools participating, eight points are awarded for first place with second receiving seven and so on. A tie results in adding the total points for the tied spots together and dividing by the number of teams that are tied, with the teams sharing the points.  Aquinas edged out second-place Madonna by three points.

The Saints won conference championships in Men's Cross Country, Men's Basketball, Women's Indoor Track & Field, Men's Outdoor Track & Field, Women's Outdoor Track & Field and tied for the top spot in Men's Soccer.

LIERMAN LEADS SAINTS INTO WHAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

John Lierman

John Lierman's 25 point

performance keys the Saints

victory over Indiana Tech.

March 2 -- The men's basketball team defeated Indiana Tech 80-65 to advance to the WHAC Championship, which will be contested at Aquinas College on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The Saints will take on Cornerstone who defeated UM Dearborn 92-67 in the other WHAC semifinal.

The Saints received a big lift from junior John Lierman who delivered 25 points, six rebounds and four assists. All of Lierman's six three pointers seemed to come at critical times when the Saints needed a basket. Damacious White continued his fine play of late as his athleticism sparked the Saints in the second half. White finished the contest with 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Matt Weiss also played big in the second half for the Saints.

After Pedja Lazic recorded his fourth foul at the 14:00 mark of the second half, Weiss was inserted and played some of the best basketball of his career. It was not Matt's stat line (two points, one rebound), but his defense on Indiana Tech's big man Brad Webster which was nothing less than sensational. During Weiss's eleven minute stint the Saints pulled away from the Warriors and inched one step closer to a WHAC conference tournament championship.

AQUINAS COLLEGE ATHLETICS RECOGNIZED AS CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER
NAIA Champions of Character
November 19 -- The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced today that 199 colleges and universities were named Champions of Character institutions for the 2007-08 school year. The total number of member institutions recognized shows a 20% increase from 2006-07. These institutions share the NAIA’s commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total education process.

The mission of Champions of Character is to restore character values and raise a generation of students who understand and demonstrate in everyday decisions respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. The NAIA and member institutions use the Champions of Character program to instill an understanding of character values in sport, and provide student-athletes, coaches and parents the training to help them know and do the right things, inside and outside the sports setting.

“Champions of Character has a profound impact on student-athletes, coaches and in the communities the NAIA and member institutions serve. I am delighted to see an increase in the number of schools that use the program to intentionally teach character,” said Rob Haworth, NAIA Vice President for Champions of Character. “Champions of Character uses the power of sport to teach lessons for life. I applaud these institutions for their commitment to advance character-driven intercollegiate athletics.”

The program is dedicated to the principle that character is a choice and that being a champion is not just about winning, but making good decisions consistently in daily life. To be considered a Champions of Character institution, schools must complete a form which is later reviewed by a team directed by Haworth. These institutions must demonstrate how the campus incorporates the Champions of Character program in five specific areas: athletic contests, public service projects, established policies related to behavior in practice and game situations, athletic and academic environment and character education.

AQUINAS CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS UP WITH MY TEAM TRIUMPH

Members of the Aquinas College cross country team crossed the finish with

Captain Matt from

My Team Triumph

October 21 -- MY TEAM TRIUMPH is an athletic ride-along program created for children, teens, adults and veterans with disabilities who would normally not be able to experience endurance events such as triathlons or marathons. The participants with disabilities are known as "Captains," and the athletes who have the honor of pushing and pulling the Captains on the course are called their "Angels."

The Aquinas College cross country team had the unique opportunity to take part in this wonderful program and to be Matt's "Angels" at the Grand Rapids Marathon. "Captain" Matt Smith, who all the team members will never forget, provided encouragement, inspiration and motivation to keep pushing faster as the Saints, in relay form, pushed Matt through the 26.2 mile course.

"Captain" Matt and his "Angels" covered the course in a very respectable three hours and 21 minutes. "Captain" Matt received his finishing medal and wore it with pride and honor and showed his "Angels" the real meaning of courage and spirit.

Also at the Grand Rapids Marathon, former Aquinas College Cross Country and Track standouts had very successful days. Josh Miller finished second overall with a time of 2:32 and Leo Foley finished right behind Miller in third place with a 2:33. After defeating Rochester (3-0) to open the season, the Saints then fell to Ferris State (0-3). Over the holiday weekend the Saints competed in the highly competitive Cornerstone Classic which drew teams from all over the country. Aquinas finished third out of the ten team field and finished the weekend with three victories and only one defeat.

On Friday night Aquinas opened up against Northwestern Ohio. After falling behind two sets to zero, the Saints rallied to win the next three sets and the match. The Lady Saints kept momentum on their side as

Aquinas proceeded to defeat the #17 ranked team in the country, Walsh (3-0). Coach Dave Rawles, who was more than a little excited by his team's play replied, "This has to be one of the biggest victories in some time by a Saints volleyball team, it is definitely something to build on.".

On Saturday Aquinas split their two matches. In the early contest the Saints were defeated by Malone (1-3), but responded very well in defeating Virginia Intermont handily (3-0) in the final match of the tournament.

The Saints return to the floor on Friday when they travel south to play Indiana University Northwest and Purdue North Central.

AQUINAS ASSISTANT COACH RAY FRON HEADED TO SPRING HILL COLLEGE

Coach Ray Fron

August 11 -- Veteran Aquinas College women’s assistant basketball coach Ray Fron has accepted a head coaching position at Spring Hill College.  Located in Mobile, Al, Spring Hill College, the third oldest Jesuit college in the country, competes as a NAIA Div. 1 institution.  Fron, a native from Grand Rapids, MI and a graduate of Catholic Central High school joined head coach Linda Nash during Nash’s first season as head coach twelve years ago.  During that period, Fron has assisted in developing Aquinas College into a perennial powerhouse.  The Saints are coming off their fourth consecutive 20-plus winning season and two trips to the NAIA national tournament in the last four years.  During that period, the Saints have boosted six All-Americans and numerous All-Conference performers.

Nash comments, “I am so happy for Ray Fron.  He has contributed so much to our women’s basketball program over the 12 years at Aquinas College.  He has wanted to be a head coach for a while and I think Spring Hill College is very fortunate to get a quality coach of his caliber.  He is a hard worker, a knowledgeable coach and most importantly a good person.  He cares about his players.  Our friendship will live on.”

Prior to coaching at Aquinas College, Fron was the girl’s varsity basketball coach at Central Catholic High School in Modesto, CA.,  from 1992-96 where he led the program to its first ever state sectional playoffs and recorded a school record number of victories.  Fron upon completing his undergraduate degree at Grand Valley State University was a Special Education teacher the past nine years at Pinewood Middle School in the Kentwood district.  He will complete his Masters Degree in the Art of Teaching in the fall from Aquinas College.

MIKE DEAN VOTED FIRST EVER WHAC SID OF THE YEAR

Mike Dean

Longtime Aquinas College statistician, historian and sports information professional Mike Dean has been named the first ever Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference SID of the Year in a vote by his peers at their annual SID meeting held Tuesday on the campus of Siena Heights University.

The award honors an outstanding Sports Information profesional in the conference, and will be named the Mike Dean SID of the Year award from this point forward.  The new Mike Dean SID of the Year award will be presented each July by a vote of each WHAC SID.

"I thought it was a fitting tribute to everything Mike has done not only for Aquinas College, but our conference over the past 15 years that we name the award in his honor," stated Matt Fancett, WHAC Media Relations Director.  "The fact that Mike won it in a vote by his peers just makes it that much more special."

Dean, who earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1978, presently holds the unique title of statistician/historian in the Aquinas Sports Information department, where he has worked closely with the baseball, softball, volleyball, basketball and soccer teams since joining the staff in 1984.  In addition to his duties at Aquinas, Dean also has served as WHAC statistician, compiling weekly statistical reports in all sports since the 2007 season.

Those familiar to the Grand Rapids and WHAC sports scenes should immediately conjure up the image of Dean who has become synonymous with Aquinas sporting events whether he is paddle-waving from the basketball scorers table, treating fans to the National Anthem and other ballpark favories on  his harmonica or simply mezmorizing Aquinas and visiting coaches with his ability to serve as a human-statistical calculator.

Dean's passion for baseball earned him national recognition in 2006 when the National Baseball Congress awarded him the Hap Dumont trophy in honor of his 22 years of service as the official statistician and historian for the NBC World Series.

While Dean's position at Aquinas ranks second to his other job compiling the Scoreboard page seven nights per week for The Grand Rapids Press, his countless contributions to Aquinas Athletics have been a vital ingredient in the success of the school's athletic programs during the past 20 years, culminating with the baseball team's first trip to the NAIA World Series in 2005.

"Mike is definitely a multi-talented, one-of-a-kind person in this business," said Aquinas Athletic Director Terry Bocian, who originally hired Dean and has worked closely with him as both head baseball coach and athletic director.

"The dedication, professionalism and the meticulous approach he brings to everything he does has earned him the respect of everyone in the local sports field and throughout the state of Michigan." Bocian added.

Of those Mike Dean has had an impact on is former Madonna University Sports Information Director, current MU Director of Athletics and WHAC President Bryan Rizzo who worked closely with Dean in his time as both Madonna SID and as SID at the conference and regional levels.

"Legend! That is what I think of when I think of Mike Dean," commented Rizzo.  "He is the best of the SIDs that I have ever dealt with…first as a student reporter, then a colleague. Mike knows and does it better than anyone. He is the barometer by which all others should be measured."

On top of all his other duties, Dean serves as the official statistician for the West Michigan Whitecaps, and, on the extremely rare occasion that Dean gets a free moment, he volunteers to keep score or announce games at area high schools and colleges.

While Dean still dreams of scoring a Major League Baseball game one day, all of the coaches, players and fans of AQ Athletics hope that his association with the College does not end anytime soon.

"Mike does the work of three of four people - he thrives on that. If he ever left Aquinas, he would be extremely hard to replace." Bocian said. "Where else can you go where the same guy will announce the game, keep the official scorebook and play the national anthem on his harmonica before the game?"
