Season Preview

The Saints take the ice this year with nine fresh faces in the program. While graduating five seniors last year, Coach VanVliet is confident his boys won’t lose a step with the talent that they have brought in for the 2014-15 campaign. Finishing with a 17-5-3 record from last year, the Saints had momentous wins against perennial powerhouses such as Hope, Davenport, and Oakland. This year they look to build on that and focus on finishing the weekend like they start it. “We had some wins last year that came as nice surprises, games we weren’t sure if we would be in. This year we expect to be competitive every time we step on the ice,” stated VanVliet before their opening matchup with Holy Cross this year. The Saints are aiming high going into another season in the MCHC, a league known for dominating the national stage. Coach VanVliet’s commented on his team’s goals for the season, “The MCHC has produced ten of the last twelve national finalists, and five of the last six national champions. If we are going to get to Alabama(National Tournament) in March, it will mean we played and beat the toughest teams in the country to get there. We’re confident we are making the necessary preparations to do that.” The coaches recently announced their captains; Captain Brenden Giffel (Jr., Grandville), Alternate Captains Justen Caudill (Jr., Monroe), and Sam Matthews (Jr. Hopkins). The Saints open on home ice Friday October 10th, against Indiana Tech University. Home games are played at Griff’s Ice House.
