10/07/2013 – The men's hockey team recorded two victories over the weekend as they swept Detroit Mercy in a home-and-home series. The Saints improved to 3-0 on the season, while the Titans fell to 0-2 overall.
The Saints traveled to the Motor City and saw the offense strike early at the Sports Center. A pair of even strength goals in the first period were recorded by Greg Baranyai and Corey Giffel. The Saints extended their advantage to three on a power play goal by Doug Zelenka midway through the second period. The Titans closed the gap three minutes later as Ian Bever scored UDM's first goal of the season.
Sam Matthews goal, the eventual game winner, came early in the third period to regain the three score lead. The Titans rallied and scored two late third period goals, but could not climb all the way back as the Saints prevailed 4-3. Sean Schmeiser was credited with the victory in net for Aquinas as he stopped 27 shots on goal.
The two teams returned to Grand Rapids the following evening to kickoff the Saints home schedule at Griff's Ice House. The Aquinas faithful were treated to an Aquinas victory as the Saints remained undefeated on the year. The scoreboard showed the home team with a 9-6 advantage when the final horn sounded.
Three first period goals ignited the home crowd as the Saints staked claim to a 3-0 lead. The barrage of goals were turned in by Cody Edwards, Brent Steele and Zelenka. The Titans did not panic and rattled off three consecutive goals of their own to enter the first intermission with a even-up match.
The trend continued during the second period as the Saints added three goals to go up 6-3. A pair of goals by Zelenka completed his hat trick as well as a score by Greg Baranyai six minutes into the period gave the Saints some much needed breathing room. A late goal by Carson Miller closed the scoring in the second with the Saints holding a three goal lead (7-4).
Travis Mitchell added two goals in the third period to match the two goals tallied by the Titans to complete the 9-6 victory for the Saints. Matthew Glowacki, the Saints goalie, was credited with the victory as he stopped 34 UDM shots on goal.
The Saints will now host Xavier (4-1) in a weekend series at Griff's Ice House starting on Friday night.
