11/03/2013 – The men's hockey team improved their record to 8-1–1 by powering their way to a 6–2 home victory over Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon. The victory in the matinee affair gave the Saints a perfect 3-0 record over the weekend. After grinding out two MCHC league wins on Friday and Saturday over Lansing Community College, the Saints relied on their fitness and solid ‘team play’ and outdistanced themselves from the Fighting Irish.
After a scoreless first period, in which both teams had excellent scoring opportunities, the Saints struck first early in the second period on goals by Cody Edwards (assisted by Justen Caudill and Greg Baranyai) and Corey Giffel (assisted by Jimmy McDonagh). The lead proved to be short lived as the Fighting Irish regrouped after calling a timeout and tallied two goals of their own to pull even. However, the Saints were not to be outdone and pulled away late in the second on goals by Corey Giffel – his second of the game (assisted by Greg Baranyai) and Doug Zalenka (assisted by Carson Miller).
The Saints completely dominated play in the third period as they pulled away on goals by Justen Caudill (assisted by Danny Brumley and Lucas Nadrasik) and Kyle Jansens (assisted by Corey Giffel). The Saints had 36 shots on goal, while Notre Dame could only muster 19. Sean Schmeiser, a freshman goaltender, was strong in net as he picked up his second win of the weekend.
The Saints are currently tied for first place in the MCHC West Division with an unblemished 2–0 league mark. Aquinas will travel to Louisville this weekend to play the University of Louisville in a two game set.
