11/10/2013 – The men's soccer team extended their season by defeating Marygrove by the score of 3-1 to advance to the WHAC's final four. The victory improved the Saints record to 15-3-1, while the Mustangs concluded their season with a mark of 11-8. The Saints will now travel to Lima, Ohio on Tuesday to play Northwestern Ohio (14-2-3) in one of two WHAC semifinal match-ups. The other half of the bracket has Madonna traveling to Davenport.
The Saints, who defeated Marygrove 4-0 earlier in the season, were looking for the season sweep and the opportunity to square off with the Racers of Northwestern Ohio. The Saints were one of only two teams to defeat the Racers during the regular season.
Aquinas senior, Tucker Hogarth, kick started the offense with his second goal of the season during the 32nd minute of play. WHAC "Newcomer of the Year", Aldony Mendez, was credited with the assist on the matches first goal. Mendez netted the eventual game winner early in the second half as he notched goal number 17 on the season. Mendez's goal was assisted on by Jon Malecke to give the Saints a two goal lead. Marygrove continued to battle and sliced the lead to one goal as Gonzalo Caceres scored on a set up from Oneil Robinson at the 63:49 mark of the second half. With the game and season hanging in the balance Mendez struck again and added an insurance goal to secure the tournament win. Jonathan Spencer recorded his fifth assist of the season on Mendez's second goal of the match.
Craig Demshuk was awarded the victory in net as he stopped four shots on goal, while his counterpart, Levanno Lewis, tallied three saves. Marygrove outshot Aquinas 17-13.
