11/15/2013 – The women's volleyball team extended their season by defeating Northwestern Ohio in five sets to advance to the semifinal round of the WHAC Tournament. The victory improved the Saints record to 25-9, while the Racers concluded their season with a mark of 21-8. The Saints will now play host and #1 seed Madonna (36-0) in one of two semifinal pairings on Saturday. Seventh-seed Lourdes and third seeded Cornerstone will battle in the other half of the bracket.
The Saints, who were defeated by the Racers in four sets earlier in the season, were looking to even the score and advance to the final four of the WHAC Championships. The Saints seized control of the match early by defeating the Racers 25-23 in set number one. Northwestern Ohio quickly regrouped and won the second and third sets by identical 25-17 scores. The Saints, whose season was hanging in the balance, muscled out a hard fought victory in the fourth set (27-25) to stay alive. In the fifth and final set it was the Saints who stayed composed and executed down the stretch to prevail in the marathon match (2 hours and 13 minutes).
Molly Maynard and MacKenzie Kolstad led the offensive attack for the Saints. Maynard collected 15 kills, while Kolstad was accountable for 14. Nicci Thomas controlled the tempo and tallied 42 assists, while the defense was anchored by Rachel Sprenger who recorded 27 digs. Maynard also contributed four blocks to the cause.
