Saints Fall in WHAC Semifinals

11/17/2013 – The women's volleyball season came to a close as Madonna defeated Aquinas to advance to the WHAC Tournament finals. The victory improved the fourth-ranked Crusaders record to 37-0, while the Saints finished the 2013 season with a mark of 25-10. Madonna would later go on to defeat Lourdes in straight sets to win the WHAC title and punch their ticket to the NAIA National Championships.

The Saints, who saw a seven-win improvement from the 2012 season, knew they were up against a buzzsaw in one half of the WHAC semifinal match-ups. Aquinas did push the Crusaders to a four set affair earlier in the season, so they had confidence that they could keep pace with the national power.

Playing in the confines of their own gym, Madonna was all business and jumped out early and defeated the Saints in set one 25-12. Aquinas would inch closer during the second set, but could not over the combination of Emilie Freeman and Evia Prieditis. The Crusaders would prevail 25-19 and then conclude the match in set three with a 25-15 verdict.

Aquinas was led by Molly Maynard's seven kills. Nicci Thomas was credited with 25 assists, while Thomas and Anna Fencil both tallied nine digs. Michaela Ryan anchored the defense with three blocks.
