Saints Fall to #18 Lourdes

12/04/2013 – The men's basketball team lost a hard fought game to the Grey Wolves of Lourdes by the score of 57-55. The victory improved Lourdes record to 4-1 in the WHAC and to 7-2 overall, while the Saints fell to 3-6 on the season and to 2-3 in league play.

The anticipated low scoring, defensive heavyweight battle proved true as each squad exchanged early blows with no knockouts recorded. A early seven point deficit was quickly erased as the Saints went on a 8-0 to take a one point lead at the 10:36 mark of the half. The run was triggered by the insertion of freshman point guard, Ryan Schall, who was seeing only his second stint of action this season. The remainder of the half see-sawed back and forth with the Saints staking claim to a 26-22 lead at the half.

The Saints and Grey Wolves continued to go back and forth with each other until back-to-back three point makes by Jake Bullock gave the Saints some mild breathing room at 36-32. Aquinas would extend the advantage at the 8:17 mark as Ryan Schall's two point make gave the Saints a 43-37 lead. The combined play of freshman guards, Bullock and Schall, proved vital in the Saints cause versus the #18 team in the land. The upset bid would be thwarted as the Saints offense would stall over the games final seven-plus minutes. A Kolin Kazen make with 7:19 play would prove to be the last field goal the Saints would sink on this night.

Aquinas would maintain their lead as free throw conversions gave them a 50-42 lead with just over five minutes to play. The final five minutes saw the Grey Wolves finish the game on a 15-5 run. A basket by Ron Dukes with 4.1 seconds to play broke a 55-55 tie. A last second attempt by Ryan Schall nearly forced overtime, but rimmed out to preserve the victory for Lourdes.

The trio of Schall, Bullock and Kolin Kazen each scored 11 points on the evening. The Saints will look to get back in the win column as they travel to Marygrove (0-10, 0-5) on Saturday to battle the Mustangs.
