Saints Win Steak Snapped

02/06/2014 – The men's basketball team fell behind early and never fully recovered against the fourth ranked Golden Eagles. Cornerstone maintains their lead in the conference by improving to 15-1 in the WHAC and to 22-3 on the season, while the Saints fell to 12-13 overall and 9-8 in league play. Aquinas sits in seventh place in the WHAC with five games to play in the regular season.

The games first four minutes proved critical for the Saints as an early 13-3 run by Cornerstone gave them a cushion they would hold for the rest of the contest. The Saints maintained their composure and finished the half matching Cornerstone virtually basket-for-basket. The two teams entered the halftime break with the Golden Eagles holding a 37-25 lead over Aquinas. Despite 32% shooting and being outrebounded 20-12, the Saints remained confident entering the games final twenty minutes.

Aquinas would trim the lead to ten points at four different occasions during the second half, but could never get any closer. The Saints found a better shooting touch and closed the rebound deficit in the second half, but it was not enough as the crosstown rival prevailed 76-64. Austin Semple led the Saints with 14 points, while Kolin Kazen added eleven.

The Saints will renew their rivalry with Davenport (20-5, 13-4) on Saturday as travel to Caledonia to play the tenth ranked Panthers at 3 p.m.
