02/13/2014 – Allsion Heberlein's double-double powered the Saints to a victory over Lawrence Tech on "Senior Nigth" at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. The win improved the Saints record to 12-7 in the WHAC and to 19-7 overall, while the Blue Devils fell to 9-14 on the season and to 7-12 in league play. Aquinas is currently in fifth place in the league standings with three games remaining on their schedule.
The pregame festivities were highlighted by the recognition of the seniors in the program. Carly Bardwell, Jenna Brower, Lindsey Karpowicz, Marissa Marx, Taelor Sanders and Nicci Thomas all took the floor for one final regular season home contest in front of their friends and family. Also recognized was Casey MacDonald, Director of Basketball Operations, for his years of service to the women's basketball program.
On a night that was centered around the seniors, a junior stole the show. Allison Heberlein's 25 point and 13 rebound night provided the needed spark to carry the Saints to the victory. Taelor Sanders chipped in with 15 points, while Marissa Marx added eleven in her final home regular season game.
The match-up was evenly contested throughout much of the first twenty minutes of play. The Saints nursed a five point (34-29) lead as both teams headed to the locker rooms. Aquinas found their stride early in the second half as they extended the lead to 14 points. The Blue Devils stayed competitive and pushed the lead back to single digits with 12:40 to play in the game. Aquinas quickly countered with a decisive 19-7 run to put the game out of reach. The Saints shot 57% in the second half en route to the 77-63 victory.
The Saints will hit the road for their final three regular season games. Aquinas will travel to Livonia on Saturday to hook up with the Crusaders of Madonna (12-14, 10-9 WHAC) in a pivotal WHAC showdown.
