02/16/2014 – The track and field teams received many outstanding performances in two meets this weekend at GVSU and at Calvin College.
The action started on Friday night when Caleb Teachout broke Dustin Heiler's record in the 800 meters at Grand Valley State's "Big Meet". The junior from Grand Rapids notched his seventh school record in a time of 1:51.89. The effort automatically qualified Caleb for the NAIA Indoor Championships and currently ranks him third nationally in the 800. Two hours later, Teachout teamed up with Ray Bordeaux, Tyler Johnson and Dionte Williams to hit an automatic qualifier in the men's 4x400 meter relay. The quartet completed the 1600 meters in a time of 3:17.81 to record the second fastest time in school history and the fifth fastest time in the NAIA.
Action resumed at GVSU on Saturday when the Saints continued to shine by hitting an automatic qualifier in the men's distance medley relay. Tom Willet, Joe Slomski, Luke Hawley and Nick Whise combined efforts to record a time of 10:09.68. The performance currently has the Saints ranked fourth in the national rankings. The men's track & field team is now of one of only two teams in the country to hit automatic qualifying efforts in all three relay events.
The rest of the Saints traveled across town to score ten first place efforts at the Calvin College Relays. The women's field events took center stage as both Kyra Hull and Alicia Dorko hit automatic qualifiers for the Indoor Championships. Hull's first place toss of 54-8.75 ranks her second on Aquinas all-time list, while Dorko's winning vault of 11-6 gets her back to the championships for the third straight year.
Grant Gunneson's time of 2:32.52 in the men's 1000 meter highlighted the track events for the Saints. Gunneson won the event and hit a provisional qualifying mark. Other first place performances were recorded by:
