03/03/2014 – The Aquinas College men’s lacrosse team opened the 2014 season with an 18-6 victory over Oakland University. The game, which had been scheduled to take place at Aquinas College, was contested at the indoor field at Detroit Country Day school. The Saints are now 1-0 on the season, while the Golden Grizzlies fall to 0-1.
The two teams traded goals early in the first quarter, but the Saints would score four straight to take a 6-2 lead after one. Aquinas added four more goals in the second quarter to take a 10-2 halftime lead. A strong defensive ride and efficient clearing game helped the Saints add eight more goals in the second half on the way to the 18-6 victory.
Junior attackman Zack Brancheau tied a career-high with five goals to lead the Saints. Brancheau also added an assist. Sophomore Grant Holloway scored four times and also had an assist. Ryan Ruschmann and Ben Majeske each had two goals for the Saints. Freshman Nate Cantin and Chris Wilder and junior Alex Rosema all recorded their first points as a Saint. Rosema had a goal and an assist, while Cantin and Wilder assisted on goals. Defensively, junior goalie Jimmy Watt stopped 11 shots.
The Saints will now head south for some warmer weather and tough competition against teams from the Charlotte, North Carolina area. Aquinas returns to the field on Sunday when they battle the Wofford Terriers at 2:00 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
