04/08/2014 – By defeating Calvin College in the first game of a doubleheader, Coach Crystal Laska became the second softball coach in Aquinas history to collect 200 victories. The split with the Knights leaves the Saints with a 12-11 mark on the season, while Calvin sports an overall record of 13-6.
In her seventh season as head coach, the Aquinas alum, has amassed a record of 200-120-1. Laska only trails Ray Sheler in career wins at Aquinas College. Coach Sheler tallied 255 wins during his tenure at the helm for the Saints.
Coach Laska's milestone victory is just another feather in the many caps that Crystal wears. Besides her duties as softball coach, Laska is also the Associate Athletic Director of Operations at Aquinas College. Crystal's biggest supporters are undoubtedly her husband, Chris, and their three children (Cierra, Luke and Evie). The wife and mother of three does an amazing job of balancing her professional career with her family life.
The total number of wins are impressive, but the role model she is for her student-athletes is what truly distinguishes her from many of her peers. The bonds and relationships Crystal has established with her players and their families are life-long. The values and teaching she passes onto her Saints will validate and inspire them as they venture out into the "real world".
Of course Coach Laska would have liked to sweep the doubleheader versus the Knights, but some days the ball doesn't bounce the way it should or the bats just go silent for no apparent reason. The reality of the situation is that one's worth and acceptance should never be measured in wins and losses, but by the impact that someone can make in the lives of our student-athletes.
