11/14/2010 – The women's basketball team broke into the win column with a victory over St. Marys of the Woods 64-58. The victory improves the Saints record to 1-4 on the season, while the
Pomeroys drop to 1-1 with the loss.
After surrendering the first two baskets of the game to St. Marys, the Saints went on a 21-6 run to give themselves some breathing room. The Saints used (3) three pointers and some solid defense to open up the eleven point lead. The Pomeroys did not fold as they continued to play hard and cut the Saints advantage to 31-25 at the half.
The game remained tight early in the second half as St. Marys cut the lead to two at the 16:22 mark on a layup by Chelsea Weaver. Aquinas quickly responded and then some as the Saints went on to score 14 of the next 16 points to reestablish the double digit margin. Aquinas maintained the lead until a late rally in the final minutes made the score a little closer, but the Saints recorded victory number one of the season 64-58.
The Saints were led by Danielle Kapustka who scored a career high 15 points. Kapustka's points all came from behind the three point arc where she connected on five of seven attempts. Ann Marie Shumaker chipped in with 13 points and four steals.
The Saints will look for two in a row on Wednesday when they travel to play Calumet College of St. Joseph.
