11/16/2010 – The men's basketball used a strong second half to propel the Saints to victory over Olivet 70-63. The victory was their third straight and improves Aquinas' overall record to 3-2, while the Comets fell in their first contest of the season.
Olivet used a quick start to jump out to an early 15-5 advantage, but the lead was quickly erased as the Saints scored 12 of the next 14 points to tie the game at 17. The remainder of the half was all Olivet as they continued to hit shots and the Saints seemed out of sync. The Comets took a 34-24 lead into the halftime locker room.
Coach Hammer's halftime adjustments led the Saints on 17-6 run out of the second half gate. Aquinas took their first lead at 41-40 on a three point make by Damacious White at the 15:06 mark of the half. The Saints seemed poised to run away the contest, but before you knew it the Comets had worked their lead back to six with just over ten minutes to play in the half. Aquinas retooled and started to get the ball inside and found some opportunities for some easy buckets. The Saints showed poise and maturity down the stretch as they made all the big shots and made the necessary defensive stops.
The Saints finished the game on 25-12 run to seal the seven point victory.
The Saints were led by a balanced attack that saw four Saints in double figures led by Damacious White's 19. A.J Schmidt and Jamell Hatchett scored 15 and 12 respectively, while Zach Eddy contributed a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds.
The Saints will be back in action this weekend as they will take part in the Bethel College Tournament. Aquinas will face off with Bethel and Goshen.
