08/28/2010 – The men's soccer team opened the 2010 season by splitting a pair of games versus two non-conference opponents. The Saints fell to Walsh on Friday 2-0. Aquinas then defeated Malone on Saturday 2-1.
Walsh stung the Saints for two first half goals as Ben Truax and Jordan Semple both snuck shots past the Aquinas keeper. The Saints found some rhythm in the second half as they controlled the ball and outshot Walsh, but never could find the back of the net. Mike Kelly was credited with the shutout for Walsh (5 saves).
Aquinas notched their first win of the year in Saturday's game against Malone University. The Saints fell behind 1-0 on a goal by the Pioneer's Adam Sharpnack in the 12th minute. Aquinas tied the game later in the first half thanks to Ruben Ornelas-Luna first goal of the season. The next fifty minutes were played in a 1-1 tie until freshman Tyler Fischer dazzled the crowd with a spectacular game winning goal from just outside the box. Once again the Saints controlled the ball and outshot their opponent 11-3.
The Saints will take their 1-1 record on the road next weekend as Aquinas matches up with Georgetown College and Huntington University in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
