Saints Fall to Knights in GRSHOF Classic

11/26/2010 – The men's basketball team dropped their third straight, as the Saints fell to the Calvin College Knights 61-44. The victory evens the Knights record at 2-2, while the Saints dropped to 3-5 with the defeat. Calvin will now take on Cornerstone in the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic Championship game tomorrow at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. The Saints and Hope Flying Dutchman will play in the Consolation game which will start at 6 p.m. tomorrow.

The two teams started slowly as both squads were searching for a consistent rhythm. The game remained tight and at the 8:48 mark of the first half the two teams were deadlocked at 13. The next eight plus minutes proved deadly for the Saints as Calvin finished the half on a 20-4 run to take a 33-17 lead into the locker room. The Saints committed 13 first half turnovers and shot a dismal 22% from the field.

The second half started just as the first had ended with Calvin in total control. The Knights outscored the Saints 15-7 over the first ten minutes of the second half. Aquinas now faced a 24 point deficit with 9:25 remaining in the game. The Saints made a mini rally and cut the lead to twelve at the 5:43 mark in half number two. A three point play by AJ Schmidt and flurry of baskets by Sandy Underwood spearheaded the 12-0 run. The Knights stopped the run and the Saints as they finished off the game not allowing Aquinas to get any closer.

Freshman Sandy Underwood led the attack for the Saints as he scored ten points, grabbed five rebounds and recorded three steals. On the night Aquinas shot 28% from the field, 62% from the free throw line and committed 22 turnovers. Tom Snikkers and Brad Schnyders paced the Knights with eleven points a piece.
