12/30/2010 – The men's basketball team defeated #24 Huntington University 72-69 at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. The victory pushes the Saints overall record to an even 8-8, while the Foresters drop to 12-3 on the season. The Saints have now won three straight and appear to be ready for WHAC play to resume next week.
In light of the holidays, the Saints were in a giving mood that saw them give the Aquinas faithful one of the best halves of the season. The Saints also gave Huntington a light of hope and gave the Aquinas brain trust potential heart failure during a second half that saw the lead dwindle from 25 to three. With all that being said, the Saints found themselves on the winning end of a 72-69 scoreboard over one of the top 25 teams in the country.
The Saints were dominating every facet of the game that allowed them to build a 25 point lead with just over thirteen minutes to play in the game. A balanced attack, strong rebounding and smart play all lead to impending rout.
For as good as the first 27 minutes of play were for the Saints, the last thirteen minutes proved to be the exact opposite. A Forester squad that was on life support all of a sudden found their legs and finished the game on a 37-15 run. The Saints, however had just enough cushion to retain the lead and hold on for the three point victory.
The Saints were led by Damacious White, who paced four Saints in double figures with 19 points. Matt Weiss and AJ Schmidt scored 13 points apiece, while Brett Pfahler chipped in with eleven points.
Aquinas will return to action next Wednesday as they travel to play UM Dearborn (4-10, 2-2 WHAC) at 7:30 p.m.
