01/05/2011 – The women's basketball team defeated UM Dearborn 86-78 on the strength of Shelby Carter's 28 points and ten rebounds. The victory improves the Saints record to 6-11 overall and 3-1 in the league, while the Wolves drop to 2-14 overall and 0-5 in the WHAC. Currently the Saints are in second place in the WHAC, one game behind #1 ranked Davenport.
Aquinas' Shelby Carter was the difference maker in the first half as she tallied 23 of her career high 28 points during the first stanza. Carter's play combined with 50% field goal shooting during the half only led to a one point lead as the Wolves were up to the challenge on this night. The half saw five ties and five lead changes with the Saints largest lead coming at the 8:22 mark at 32-21.
UM Dearborn came out of the halftime locker room to score the first seven points of the half and build a six point lead. The lead was short lived as Taelor Sanders keyed the Saints on an 18-2 surge to put the Saints back on top for good. Aquinas out shot UM Dearborn 48%-41% and won the rebound war 45-36.
Besides Carter's fine play the Saints also received a double-double effort from Taelor Sandres who scored 18 points and grabbed eleven rebounds. Marisa Marx also continued her fine play as she scored 15 points, including four from beyond the three point arc.
The Saints will host Siena Heights (6-11, 1-3 WHAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
