01/15/2011 – The women's basketball team was defeated by the #1 ranked Panthers by the score of 84-59 at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. The victory improves Davenport's record to 21-0 on the season and 7-0 in league play, while the loss drops the Saints record to 3-4 in the WHAC and 6-14 overall.
Coach Nash had her Saints ready to play as the Saints opened the game with a flurry and had the Panthers playing on their heels for the better part of the first half. Aquinas outshot the Panthers during the first half and maintained an advantage for the first fifteen minutes of the game. A late surge by Davenport gave them a ten point lead (39-29) heading into the halftime locker room.
Davenport's athleticism and experience took control in the second half and the Panthers showed why they are the number one team in the country. The Saints maintained composure and continued to play hard until the final whistle, but it was not enough as Davenport prevailed 84-59. Kallie Benike led Davenport with 24 points and eight rebounds, while the Saints were led by Ann Marie Shumaker's eleven points.
Aquinas will close the first half of the WHAC season on Wednesday when the Saints host Madonna (7-8, 3-4 WHAC) at 7:30 p.m.
