Helminiak, Smith and Sarros Lead Saints at IWU

02/06/2011 – The track & field teams traveled to Marion, Indiana over the weekend to compete at the IWU Wildcat Invitational. The Saints performed well and continue to prep for the upcoming WHAC Championships in two weeks.

Highlighting the meet for the Saints was Ryan Helminiak, who competed in the men's high jump event. The sophomore from Manistee cleared 6-8 1/4 to automatically qualify himself for the NAIA Indoor National Championships. Helminiak's jump currently ranks him fifth in the country and is now tied for #2 on the Saints All-Time List with Bill Hebert (1975).

Emily Smith continues to show improvements in the women's 20lb. weight throw as she bettered last week's toss by two feet. Smith's throw of 52-3 1/4 ranks her as the second best weight thrower in Aquinas history. Emily missed Heather Becker's school record by three inches. Smith is currently ranked 16th in the country with her throw from Saturday.

Freshman, Emily Sarros, notched another personal best in the pole vault as she soared over 10-3 1/4. Sarros' vault is the second best all-time by someone in an Aquinas uniform.

The men's middle distance crew continued their fine season as Nick Thelen teamed up with Grant Gunneson, Stephen Huizing and Dustin Heiler to hit the provisional qualifier in the Men's 3200 Meter Relay. The Saints time of 7:58.11 ranks the foursome 7th in the country.

Aquinas will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Angola, Indiana to compete at the Trine Invitational.
