02/06/2011 – The women's basketball team received a big lift from Vicky VanDyke down the stretch to secure the three point win versus UM Dearborn. The victory improves the Saints record to 9-17 overall and 5-7 in league play, while the Wolves drop to 2-22 on the season and 0-13 in the WHAC.
The Saints, who were looking to end a three game skid, started out strong and built the lead to as many as eleven during the first half. The first ten minutes of half number two saw the Wolves go on a 19-7 run and take a four point lead. UM Dearborn maintained the lead until the 2:24 mark when Ann Marie Shumaker's three tied the game at 55.
The final two minutes belonged to Vicky VanDyke. The senior from Kenowa Hills willed the Saints to victory as she notched four points, two rebounds and an assist during the pivotal closing moments. VanDyke's inspired play enabled the Saints to squeak out the three point victory, 60-57.
Shelby Carter led the Saints in scoring with twelve points, while Liza Flewelling chipped in with ten points. Taelor Sanders contributed nine points, eight rebounds and three assists.
The Saints will return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Adrian to battle Siena Heights (9-16, 4-8) at 7:30 p.m.
