Saints Lose a Heartbreaker to Siena

02/10/2011 – The women's basketball team was defeated by Siena Heights on a free throw in the final second of regulation by She'Meika Nicholson. The victory improves Siena's record to 10-16 on the season and 5-8 in the league, while Aquinas falls to 9-18 on the year and 5-8 in WHAC play.

Both teams are in the midst of the stretch run in their respective seasons and are jockeying for position in the upcoming WHAC Tournament. Needless to say the game had some meaning, especially since Siena had won the first meeting of the season 80-72.

Aquinas played very well in the first half. The Saints built an eight point lead on 50% field goal shooting. A balanced attack and some strong defense gave the Saints the 32-24 advantage at the half. The lead quickly dissolved as Siena Heights stormed out and scored the first ten points of the second half.

The game from that point on was played close to the vest as neither team could muster more than a six point lead. Aquinas forged ahead with 30 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws by Clare Conway. Siena Heights responded and tied the game with 17 seconds remaining on a bucket by Nikki Hughes. Aquinas' fate was sealed in the final moments as She'Meika Nicholson hit the back end of two free throws to win the game 55-54.

Clare Conway led three Saints in double figures with 14 points. Sophomores Taelor Sanders and Lindsey Karpowicz both chipped in with twelve points for Aquinas.

The Saints return to action on Saturday as Aquinas will play host to Concordia (18-9, 9-4) at 1 p.m. at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
