02/17/2011 – The men's basketball team used a late rally to almost pull off the upset of #11 Davenport at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. The victory improves the Panthers record to 25-4 on the season and 12-3 in league play, while the Saints fall to 11-18 on the year and 3-12 in the WHAC.
The Saints, who shot 29% and committed ten turnovers in the first half, found themselves within ten at the halftime break thanks in part to their strong rebounding and defensive play.
Davenport would increase the lead to a dozen at two different junctures of the second half. The last coming at the 7:57 mark when the Panthers led 41-29.
At this point it would have been easy to the throw in the towel, but Coach Hammer's troops rallied and almost pulled off an amazing victory. A three point play by Jamell Hatchett and a basket by Matt Weiss cut the lead to 41-34 with 5:29 remaining in the contest. Following a pair of free throws by Davenport's Nathan Cox that extended the lead to nine, the Saints would rally with the next nine points.
A bucket by Sandy Underwood and a three point play by Damacious White brought the Saints within four. A thunderous dunk by Matt Weiss cut the lead to two with thirty seconds to play. A free throw miss by the Panthers and a two point make by Damacious White brought the Saints all the way back to tie the game at 43 with ten seconds to play. Davenport's Lonnie Fairfax proceeded to dribble the ball up the court and convert on the game winning lay-up with three seconds to play.
The Saints held the Panthers to four points over the games last eight minutes, but it was not enough as Aquinas fell 45-43.
Aquinas will host Madonna in the regular season finale on Saturday at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center at 3 p.m.
