03/21/2011 – The men's baseball team opened the WHAC portion of their schedule with a three game sweep of the visiting Saints from Siena. Aquinas improves to 6-8-1 on the season, while Siena Heights drops to 4-15 on the year. The series was originally scheduled to go four games, but Mother Nature intervened and the final game was rained out.
The theme for the weekend for the Saints was strong pitching and timely hitting. On Saturday, Aquinas defeated Siena in the first game 5-1. Vince Misiewicz notched his first victory of the year, as the converted reliever scattered four hits and struck out eight over seven innings. Kennen Less went 3-3 and scored a run and also recorded a RBI. Ryan Grigonis also fared well as he went 2-2 and drove in two runs.
The second game saw similar results as Aquinas completed game two with a 5-3 victory. Corey Garneau improved to 2-1 on the season as he went seven and a third to record the victory. Corey struck out six batters and allowed six hits and one earned run in his tour of duty. Kevin Schafer closed the door on Siena to notch his first save of the year. Drew Huard, Austin King, Ryan Grigonis and Scott Witkop all recorded two hits to lead the Saints offensive attack.
Game one on Sunday proved to be a little more interesting, but the Saints survived the seven inning affair 7-4. Tyler Cole earned his first victory of the season as he pitched six strong innings and allowed one earned run. Cole allowed five hits and struck out three Siena batters en route to his win. Jake Ritsema entered the game in a tight spot in the seventh, but kept Siena at bay to secure the victory for the Saints. Kennen Less led the attack for the Saints offense with three hits, two runs and one RBI. Drew Huard notched four stolen bases in the Saints victory.
Aquinas will entertain Grand Rapids Community College and Kellogg Community College before returning to conference play on Saturday and Sunday versus Indiana Tech.
