04/18/2011 – Emily Smith, Devin Lea and Dustin Heiler were all first place performers at the Northwood Invitational in Midland. The Saints continue to gain momentum as they head toward the WHAC Championships at Houseman Field in three weeks.
Emily Smith's toss of 45.51 meters won the discus competition by almost two meters. Rachel Luehm also had a big day as she recorded the second fastest women's 3000 meter steeplechase of all-time. Luehm's time of 11:43 was a 31 second personal best for the junior from St. Louis, Michigan.
Dustin Heiler led a strong Aquinas contingent at the front of the 800 meters. Heiler's time of 1:55.15 placed first, while Nick Thelen (2nd), Grant Gunneson (3rd), Kolin Stickney (5th) and Charles Irmen (6th) all placed well among the 40 competitors in the event. Devin Lea set a personal (15:04) en route to winning his second consecutive 5k of the year.
The Saints will return to action on Friday and Saturday as Aquinas hosts the Ernie Mousseau Track Classic at Houseman Field.
