11/04/2011 – The women's basketball team found success at the Taylor University Tip-Off Tournament in Upland, Indiana. The Saints jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as Aquinas defeated future WHAC member, Marygrove.
Aquinas, who will now face either Taylor or Trinity Christian in tomorrow's final, used a 14-0 surge midway through the first half to secure the early lead. The Mustangs from Marygrove withstood the Saints initial push and found their rhythm near the end of the first half. The Saints 15 point lead was trimmed to two before Aquinas scored seven of the final nine points in the half. The Saints led at the halftime break 36-29.
Aquinas broke the game wide open during an early second half attack. The Saints outscored the Mustangs 23-8 during the decisive seven and a half minute stretch. Marygrove continued to battle, but had no answer for the dynamic duo of Anne Marie Shumaker and Taelor Sanders. Shumaker scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Sanders filled the stat sheet with 17 points, seven rebounds, seven steals, and six assists. The pair ignited the Saints to the 79-51 opening night victory. Shelby Carter chipped in with eleven points to help the cause.
The Saints out shot the Mustangs 43%-38% and forced 32 Marygrove turnovers.
