11/05/2011 – The women's volleyball team concluded their season after falling to Madonna in the final match in Pool C. The Crusaders will now advance to the WHAC semifinals, while Aquinas finishes their season at 26-12.
The Saints started the day with an impressive three set victory (25-14, 25-18, and 25-10) over Concordia to set up the decisive match with Madonna. Allison Griffiths anchored the offense with ten kills, while Jessica Bredeweg recorded 18 assists. Elle Sturgell assisted on five blocks and Sarah LeClair notched 18 digs to lead the defense.
The Saints and Crusaders staged an epic battle in the afternoon session of the tournament. Both squads elevated their levels of play knowing it was "win or go home". Aquinas started quickly and found themselves on the winning end of a 25-19 first set. Madonna found their grove during set number two (25-16) to pull even with the Saints at a set a piece. The volleyball fans at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center then watched a marathon of a set that saw 22 ties and 12 lead changes. The Crusaders finally got the best of the Saints (38-36) to claim the one set advantage. Despite the set that would not end, both teams exhibited great composure during the fourth and final set. Madonna claimed the fourth set (25-22) and advanced to next weekend's WHAC semifinals.
Chelsea Phillips recorded 19 kills in her final match to led the Saints offensively. Phillips also accounted for four solo and four assisted blocks. The duo of Jessica Bredeweg and Nicci Thomas combined for 47 assists, while Sarah LeClair added 19 more digs to her school record total.
