11/25/2011 – The men's basketball team was defeated by Hope College 67-65 in the first game of the annual Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic. The Flying Dutch improved to 3-0 with the victory, while the Saints fell to 2-6 on the season.
The two teams see-sawed back and forth during a first half that saw eight ties and eleven lead changes. The Flying Dutch went into the halftime locker room with a 31-28 advantage. The contest, which was played at Cornerstone University, turned ever so slowly in Hope's favor as the duo of David Krombeen and Peter Bunn lifted the Flying Dutch to a ten point lead with 11:34 to play in the game. Coach Hammer's crew stayed poised and kept the game tight. Late in the game Kevin Grant's steal and dunk brought the Saints within three. A free throw make by Ken Gordon cut the advantage to 64-62, but the Saints could never quite get over the hump. Joe Powers and Brett Pfahler led the Saints with 14 and 13 respectively.
The Saints will return to action today with a tilt versus Calvin College (3-2) at 6 p.m. The game will also be played at Cornerstone University.
